Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to common questions about EcoMind
How does EcoMind track my AI usage?▼
EcoMind uses a Chrome extension that monitors API calls to supported AI providers (OpenAI, Anthropic, Google AI, etc.) in real-time. It calculates environmental impact based on published energy consumption data and your usage patterns.
Is my data private?▼
Yes! EcoMind is privacy-first. All tracking happens locally in your browser by default. Your API calls and usage data never leave your device unless you explicitly enable cloud sync. We don't store your prompts or responses.
Which AI providers are supported?▼
We support OpenAI (ChatGPT, API), Anthropic (Claude), Google AI (Gemini), Cohere, Perplexity, xAI (Grok), Mistral, Hugging Face, Replicate, Together AI, Groq, DeepSeek, Azure OpenAI, OpenRouter, and more. We're constantly adding new providers.
How accurate are the environmental calculations?▼
Our calculations are based on peer-reviewed research and published data from AI providers. However, these are estimates, as actual energy consumption varies by data center, model version, and infrastructure. We use conservative estimates to avoid understating impact.
Can I use EcoMind without creating an account?▼
Yes! The Chrome extension works entirely offline with local storage. You only need an account if you want to sync data across devices, access the web dashboard, or enable team features.
How do I install the Chrome extension?▼
Download EcoMind from the Chrome Web Store. Click "Add to Chrome" and the extension will start tracking your AI usage automatically. No configuration required.
Can I track usage from API calls in my code?▼
Yes! The Chrome extension tracks any API calls made from your browser, including those from web apps, development tools, and browser-based IDEs. For server-side tracking, contact us about our SDK.
How is the "national extrapolation" calculated?▼
We take your individual environmental impact and multiply it by the estimated US population of AI users (~106 million, based on white-collar workers and students). This shows what would happen if everyone used AI like you do.
